Proper Formatting of Compact Flash Card

We want to make sure that our compact flash card is always in good condition because if it breaks, important pictures or videos might get lost or worse you can no longer use your Compact Flash Card. There are a lot of common practices that camera owners do in order to keep their devices in optimum working condition. What I would like to share is what I regularly do for my compact flash cards to ensure their efficient performance.

First thing to make sure is you must buy from a reputable brand or manufacturer. This will ensure that you are covered in case any glitch occurs. Brands like Lexar offers lifetime warranty and this makes Lexar a very attractive piece to buy.

Another thing is to choose the fastest card you can afford because the faster you memory card the faster and more efficient will your camera use will be. But please be aware on the maximum capacity your camera supports. This way you can only use compact flash cards that you can actually use in your device.

Once you are sure of the quality of your flash card you must now ensure you properly back-up and format the flash card properly. It is not true that it is bad to remove the pictures all at the same time, that you must remove pictures one by one in order to keep your flash card from breaking down easily. I say this is not true because I have been using the same flash cards for some years now and I do one time deletion. So far I haven’t experienced any problems with my flash card.

What I normally do to keep a good running flash card is to regularly format my flash card using my camera instead of doing the formatting at your computer. You must always make sure that every photo in your camera is already back-up properly in your pc before you do the manual formatting via the computer. The reason for this is that we want our flash card to be regularly refreshed by regular formatting via your camera. This practice can prolong the life of your storage device. The practice of formatting varies from one person to another. But a good process is to format your flash disk every after you transfer your pictures to the computer. I reiterate that you must ensure that you have properly made a back up or copy of the pictures before you reformat your memory flash discs.

Another tip: if you want your flash card and camera to stay that long, always ensure that your memory card are properly pushed through its slot because there are some cases where this is not properly done and this is a major cause of bent of pins inside the camera.

Use the above tips in order to keep your compact flash card as well as the camera in its optimum running condition every time you use it.
